The application, which takes advantage of the hardware of our device to perform surveillance tasks, was presented today while launching its first beta version on Google Play, which can be downloaded for free at this time.
This is Haven, the surveillance app of Edward Snowden
Through its Twitter account, Snowden announces the launch of its new application for Android and iOS developed by the Guardian Project. The purpose of the application is to offer a surveillance system to those people who require a way to protect their personal space and their possessions, without endangering their own privacy. Since the application is open source, everyone can access the GitHub repository of the project, where the Haven code is hosted. In addition, from Haven, it is indicated that not only the app is open source, but all the libraries used for its development are also open source. According to the creators of the application, Haven only saves images and sound when activated automatically by movement or volume, and stores everything on the device locally. Thus, the user can choose between placing the device in a strategic location to record the point that you want to monitor or simply leave the device in a discrete position to record the audio. Later, it will be possible to access the stored content remotely or from the app itself. “We designed Haven for investigative journalists, human rights defenders and people at risk of enforced disappearance. By combining the variety of sensors found on any smartphone, with the world’s most secure communications technologies, such as Signal and Tor, Haven prevents the worst kind of people from silencing citizens without being caught in the act”.
As we said, Haven takes advantage of the hardware of the devices on which it runs. Among its capabilities, are the following:-
Accelerometer: records the movement and vibration of the phone. Camera: detects the movement captured by the rear or front cameras. Microphone: records the surrounding noise. Light sensors: detects the changes of light in the environment through the sensor. Energy: detects if the device is connected or disconnected from the current.
Haven begins its beta period on Android today through Google Play. This complete surveillance tool can be downloaded for free in the app store, or through F-Droid, a repository of open source apps.
