Having a horse in Minecraft can help you get around quickly, but if you want to build an army of horses, that’s entirely possible, too.
Finding Horses in Minecraft
First things first, you need to know where to find some wild horses. Horses can most commonly be found in the Plains and Savannas biomes. The Plains biome have large, flat areas of green grass. You’ll also find a number of lakes dotted around the biome, too. The Savanna biomes are generated next to a desert or plains biome. It’s flat and has low-elevation with scattered trees. Finally, Villagers can naturally generate stables and animal pens with horses inside them, so if you know of a nearby village, it’s worth checking it out and seeing if you can steal a horse.
How to Tame Horses in Minecraft
To breed horses, you need to tame them. To tame a horse, mount them by right-clicking on them with nothing in your hand. On consoles, you’ll want to press L2/ LT or ZL to tame the horse. When you climb on the back of the horse, it will try and eventually will, kick you off. Mount it again and continue to do so until is finally tamed. To give you some context, each time you climb on the back of the horse, you’ll add 5 temper points to the horse. When a horse goes past its max temper level — which is a random number between 0 and 99 — you’ll have tamed it. Feeding a horse apples, sugar or wheat can also increase these ‘temper points’ should you want to speed up the process and have an abundance of the stuff. You’ll know that you’ve successfully tamed a horse in Minecraft when red hearts appear around it. Once you’ve tamed two horses, you’re ready to move onto breeding them.
How to Breed Horses in Minecraft
To breed horses in Minecraft, you need to put them into “love mode” by feeding them either a Golden Apple or Golden Carrot. Enchanted Golden Apples also work for this, but they’re a fair bit rarer. You’ll need to make sure you have two of any of these so you can feed one to each of your two horses. Red hearts will come from each horse after they’ve eaten the golden apple or golden carrot. Once they both have these red hearts, they’ll turn around to face one another. After a little bit, the hearts will stop and a smaller horse will appear next to your two horses that you fenced in and fed. Congratulations, you’ve just bred horses in Minecraft. You can also breed Donkeys in the same way. You can even breed a donkey with a horse to get a baby mule. We’ve included a list of what each couple of animals will result in when breeding:
Breeding two horses will have a baby horse.Breeding two donkeys will have a baby donkey.Breeding a donkey with a horse will have a baby mule.Mules cannot breed.
A baby horse will have an average of both of its parents jumping, health and speed stats, as well as having a randomized set of stats. As such, it’s very important that you get two horses with good speed, jumping and health stats to breed together to give yourself the best possible chance of breeding an even better horse.
